Since my residency in 2019, I have returned to Amsterdam-Noord after five years at the invitation of Framer Framed with the program ‘Bread Art in the Molenwijk’. Residents, together with 10 artists as co-residents, will conduct artistic research into bread rituals according to the process of SOWING – GERMINATION – MILL – FLOUR – DOUGH – BAKING – DEMONSTRATING – CELEBRATING. Stories are collected around dough recipes and bread as cultural heritage in all forms is explored. In recent months, DOCK, Stichting SPIN and Bakkerij de Eenvoud in collaboration with Werkplaats Molenwijk & OBA Molenwijk have worked together to create a mobile bakery. Residents are now responsible for the care and ‘BuurOven’ will move to multiple locations in the neighborhood. To start the participatory research, theologian Elsa Eikema makes two types of ancient wheat (the 7000 year old Emmer and Einkorn) available for sowing. Werkplaats Molenwijk will transform into a Bread Atelier in the coming period, where kneading, baking and tasting takes place with art & dough as a tool for dialogue. In August we will harvest the summer grain and at the end of October we will share the results as a gift and to celebrate 750 years of Amsterdam through a Bread Parade, exhibition and light installation.
This residency was made possible in part by thanks to Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst (AFK) and 750 years of Amsterdam
