The Nieuw-West district of Amsterdam is changing at a rapid pace, which means dwellers no longer always recognize themselves in their environment. Over the past three months, together with residents and entrepreneurs of Nieuw-West, I have collected visual stories as emotional heritage around the question: ‘What would you like to pass on to future residents of Nieuw-West?’ These stories embody the light installation Future Monuments from 144 images. In the run-up to Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary, the artwork will be projected next month on the building above the JUMBO at Plein 40-45 till January 12, 2025. Future Monuments is a participatory and artistic research on the occasion of 750 years of Amsterdam, commissioned by project leader Theo Tegelaers and in collaboration with The Beach, Van Eesteren Museum, Cascoland and Care Design Lab.
